The railway (with its own bridge abutting the canal Bridge No 85), which has accompanied the canal for several miles is to the right of the image. This section of the canal was built in the early 1790s. The railway line was built over eighty years later and opened in 1876. No doubt the height of the canal bridge was then raised to match that of the railway bridge, which had to provide more headroom for the locomotives.
