The Jacobean mansion of the Ellys family was destroyed by fire in 1834 and rebuilt by architect William Shearburn for the 1st Earl of Ripon in 1841. The new mansion was mysteriously gutted by fire on 24th October 2004 and the ruined shell faces an uncertain future.
