My first reaction on seeing this basin was that it was a new facility put in for residents of the flats, but in fact the basin is very old, having served the Independent Gas Company's large gas works on this site, fierce rivals of the Imperial Gas Company further east until both were absorbed by the all-powerful Gas Light and Coke Company. There is no other trace now of the old gas works.
