The track from which the photo was taken leads to Woolly Hill, a farm now calling itself "Ark on the Edge", an animal rescue centre which presumably is no less economic than hill farming on this bleak bit of moorland. Looking down towards Hindon Beck, the rush-filled gully leads to a small field barn or byre in the hill fog. A mile earlier I had been cycling in bright sunshine, and a kilometre to the west on the bridleway, I emerged once again above the cloud, but Ark on the edge was shivering under a blanket of fog deep enough to exclude the sun
