Just opposite Image stands this sturdy old barn, part of the buildings surrounding the manor house where St Cuthbert Mayne was arrested in 1577 while he was working undercover as a priest ministering to the Catholics of that part of Cornwall. He used the barn as a secret chapel, and from the day of his arrest there, Golden has been a place of pilgrimage for Catholics. Even in recent times a group of them would meet here each year on 8th June, the anniversary of the saint’s arrest. Other elements of his sad story can be seen at: Image and Image and Image and Image Full article http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=2_ZstVBZSfIC&lpg=PA1&pg=PA12#v=onepage&q=&f=true
