Westgate Road is an ancient route leading west from the town, on the line of Hadrian's Wall, and pre-dates the building of the Town Walls in the late C13. The West Gate was one of the strongly fortified gates in the Wall and stood at the present junction of Pink Lane and Westgate Road.
