The development of Grainger Street west of Bigg Market proceeded after Richard Grainger's death in 1861 from the Westgate Road end. The building on the corner completed the street around 1870 and was designed by John Johnstone. The Rose & Crown Public House, built around 1914, is next door on Newgate Street. Newgate Centre with the six-storey Newgate Hotel (built 1969) can be seen to the right.
