Viewed from the pedestrian footbridge this is the A335 heading up towards the junction with the A27 Bassett Green Road / Mansbridge Road. The anonymous grey column to the right of the blue car looks like a speed camera yet there are no corresponding markings in the road. The five green rectangular shapes on the railings are planters. The 1938 Edition of the Ordnance Survey mapping shows this as the A335 High Road.
