This is the bottom end of the steps seen in another photo. The building was originally built in 1851 as a pottery warehouse, designed by the local architect Miles Thompson, and were used for a variety of industries before being converted to houses in 1980. M A Gordon suggests in 'A Short History of Kendal' that the through passage is a highway dating back to the 14C or earlier. There are other footpath-width lanes nearby such as 'Entry Lane'.
