This pit winding wheel, or sometimes described as a pulley has been placed as a memorial to the (former) nearby Cortonwood Colliery ... opened in 1873 and closed in 1985. The announcement of the closure of this pit 'sparked' the infamous 1984 Miner's Strike. After closure the colliery site was cleared and is now a Shopping and Trading Estate. Update in January 2014 Following the receipt of some very informative and interesting comments, submitted by George Clement who worked as a Colliery Overman at Cortonwood, the title and description have both been amended, to better reflect this Memorial. George has also confirmed that, due to the sale of the original Cortonwood Colliery Winding Wheel (and Winding Engines) to a mine in South Africa, the actual Wheel in the picture is from the Yorkshire Main pit The wheel is also dedicated as a WW2 Memorial … see … Image
