The Pit Winding Wheel, or Pulley, is dedicated as a memorial to those who lost their lives in WW2 ... ... and is located next to the WW1 Memorial, which was moved to this site in 1985, from its original location in the nearby Pit Lane, following the closure of Cortonwood Colliery and subsequent redevelopment into a Shopping and Industrial complex. The Memorial not only remembers those who sadly died during service, but also all of the Cortonwood Colliery Miners who enlisted for service … mainly to serve as 'Sappers' at such notorious locations as The Somme.
