John Dobson Street was built in the 1960s to relieve the pressure of traffic on the parallel Northumberland Street, which was then a major through route. Dobson (born 1787) was a locally-famous Newcastle architect who worked with Richard Grainger in a grand building scheme for the town centre ('Grainger Town'), a style now known as Tyneside Classical. Among many other buildings, he designed Newcastle Central Station, Grey Street and St Thomas' Church http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dobson_%28architect%29 On the left is the City Pool Image, situated on Northumberland Road which crosses ahead.
