Despite its proximity to All Saints church > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1667227 which it adjoins, the name of this public house refers to a type of tobacco pipe, rather than to churchwardens whose task it is to take care of their church: a churchwarden pipe is a tobacco pipe which has a (straight of curved) stem that can be as long as 40 centimetres.
