Many Hamerton lived nearby these gardens and I believe they owned this land. The Hamertons were wealthy inhabitants of Horncastle and built and owned property at the corner of East Street and South Street. By Hamerton Lane, the whole of that block of buildings, forming five shops and two private residences, once formed one large dwelling place, which belonged to the Hamertons of that day. The building had a frontage in East Street of more than 20 yards, and in South Street of 70 to 80 yards, with extensive back premises and gardens attached. In the early 1600s, three members of the Hamertons were tanners and three others were draper, yeoman and glover. To the left is a memorial to the British Korean Veterans 1950-1953, dedicated by Lincolnshire No.1 Branch 25th July 1999
