Original Old Rooms Inn 1936

This picture was taken by my Great-Uncle, the Reverend E V Tanner who was a Master at Weymouth College. The view is looking along Trinity Street in Weymouth with the Old Rooms Inn on the left, the building was originally a private dwelling that backed onto the harbour, then in the 18th century it was used as the Assembly Rooms until 1785 when new ones were built and the word 'old' was added. Steve Daniels took a picture of it in 2007 (Image) where it is now located in Cove Street, although the main bar is still located in this building, this would have been the rear of the original house. The Assembly Rooms were originally used as a sort of hostelry, where food, drink and accommodation was available, especially during the Summer (much as a modern hotel does now). The Duke of Gloucester apparently took tea here in 1771 during a visit to the town.
