The Erewash Canal which opened in 1779 is still navigable although today's traffic is for purely leisure purposes. Football supporters, especially those of Newcastle United F.C. will remember the name of Ilkeston born John Tudor who played for the "Magpies" between 1971 and 1976. After his playing career ended, John became, for a time, the licensee of the pub that stands alongside the lock.
