In summer 1964 an attempt was made to find the end of the long abandoned Lapal Tunnel. This was an extremely long small bore tunnel on the Dudley Canal, plagued by mining subsidence. Where it ought to have been, all that could be found was a recent manhole surrounded by fresh earth. Was this an access way to the remains? It seemed likely.
