In the 1860's there was a demand for public parks to provide open green spaces to fight against the increasing urban sprawl. Parisian Edouard André and local architect Louis Hornblower submitted the winning design to Liverpool Corporation's public competition, winning a prize of 300 guineas. The park was completed and officially handed over to the public in 1872. The lakes and connecting streams run the lengths of two natural valleys that intersect the park and lead into this 5 acre boating lake. Unfortunately the boathouse suffered much vandalism over the years and was demolished and the boats removed.
