Afternoon in early January, and the sun is too low to shine into this railway cutting. In fact, with trees lining the southern edge of the cutting, the sun would probably struggle even in summer! Photographed from the railway bridge near the A31. The railway, from Farnham to Alton, was opened on 25th July 1852, passing this point near the boundary of the parishes of Upper Froyle and Binsted. My ancestors, living just a few hundred yards up the road, would have witnessed the construction of this railway line. I doubt whether the rural folks would have realised just how the "coming of the railway" would transform life, in England, forever. Families, born is this area, moved to London; never to return.
