A total of 750 prefabs (prefabricated bungalows) were erected in various parts of Newport to meet a severe housing shortage after the Second World War. One such area was Ridgeway Hill. The prefabs have now gone, mostly replaced by new bungalows. This small fenced-off area, at the Allt-yr-yn Avenue end of Ridgeway Hill, awaits redevelopment. Nearby, possibly preserved for historical reasons, is probably the only remaining prefab http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1981336 in the city.
