The River Wear follows a generally south - north line through central County Durham, but in Durham City forms a tight loop, so that in this view it is flowing south. On the right hand bank, just above Elvet Bridge (not to be confused with New Elvet Bridge), the winter sunshine catches the Boathouse, formerly the Chase Bar, a pub/nightclub which is no doubt popular with Durham's large student population.
