The Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation has few typical canal-type bridges, but this is one of two across the Sandford Mill lock cut. The lock may be seen in the distance under the arch, with the second bridge beyond. "Susan" was owned by the navigation company, and was doing return trips from Chelmsford in connection with an Inland Waterways Association rally there.
