The 18th Century obelisk originally stood at the other side of the market square but for many years was lost. It was re-assembled on its current site at the south side of the square and was unveiled by the Queen in 1979 to mark the 800th anniversary of the granting of a charter to Preston. The building in the background is Crystal House, a 1960s office block.
