The Lower Dock Street area has undergone much refurbishment during recent years. When the pavement was relaid, new drainage channels were incorporated and many of these record some historical aspect relating to Newport. The one in the foreground of this view states: "1971 Spencer Steelworks starts building the biggest blast furnace in Europe".
