Although its valley is mostly rural, the water power available from river has been used by a series of textile mills. The first was Choppards Mill (Woollen), long gone, and the second, still in business, is Washpit Mill (Woollen). Here the river is bounded by high dry-stone retaining walls. The millpond is alongside the river to the right.
