The post office was opened in 1870. Originally the handsome frontage was two-storey with an ugly single-storey sorting office behind it, on the north side. It is not known when the whole building became two-storey. The four-storey extension on a cramped site was built in 1912. Further along Priory Terrace, in Image, is the sorting office, believed to date from the 1970s. Beyond it are mainly late 19th century mansions with rear gardens running down to the River Leam. The Clock Tower of All Saints Church appears on the right of the photo.
