Looking west along the back of Princes Street, which has vehicular access this side. Note that each house had a 'semi-detached' outside toilet and washing room (fireplace and chimney for heating the water for the Monday wash). This represented luxury in the 1850s when these houses were built, compared with the more normal set up of perhaps twenty houses sharing a single toilet and washing room.
