The West Coast Main Line (WCML) extends between London Euston and Glasgow Central with branches and divergences serving, among other cities, Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester, Liverpool and Edinburgh. Tring lies about mid-way on the section between Watford Junction and Bletchley. Tring Station (which also gives its name to the small community that has grown up in the immediate vicinity) lies some 2 miles from the Town Centre on the route of the former "London and Birmingham Railway" at the point just before it crosses the ridge of the Chiltern Hills. This it achieves through a notable engineering work that commences just North of this point, the 2.5 mile long "Tring Cutting", a tribute to the gangs of railway navvies who created it with nothing more than pick, shovel and wheelbarrow. Engineered by Robert Stephenson (son of George Stephenson), the line was fully opened on 17 September 1838. As can be seen from this picture and those below, the Station as it exists today is devoid of any features of architectural interest, and in recent years has been reduced to the status of a toilet-free bus shelter.
