The water tower is a well-known local landmark, sitting at the top of a hill. The road to the lower right is Essex Way, that to the mid-left is Vicarage Hill (the vicarage is at the bottom). The road to the upper right of the tower is Benfleet road, leading to Hadleigh. The snow-covered fields to the bottom are fairly pristine in this photo but, soon after, would have been criss-crossed by skiers and tobogganers.
