The present building was constructed in 1558. The name refers to Goudbeyete Manor, that Richard Duke of Normandy gave to his daughter Emma in 1012. The name probably means "the goods getter" as this was a trading centre. The name is also seen as Godbiete and God Begot. Confused? Ask, which happens to be the name of the pizza restaurant that now inhabits the building.
