One of two MD 800 Explorer helicopters operated by Yorkshire Air Ambulance, an independent charity which receives no government funding. (It costs £7,200 each day to keep both helicopters maintained and in the air, which adds up to £2.6m per year.) Hawes is an isolated town and road ambulances can take a significant time to reach it, so in emergency this helicopter (based at Leeds-Bradford Airport) is called in to help get urgent cases to hospital.
