In Tow Law the "War Memorial" is known as "The Monument". I don't actually know whether the use of "Monument" is confined to just this town, or County Durham or even the North East. There are some details on the "United Kingdom National Inventory Of War Memorials" http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show/conMemorial.10415 note: the location of the above memorial on the website is over a kilometre out.
