This seat is beside Oxford Canal lock 16 at Marston Doles. It commemorates Esme Dowling, a popular and long-standing canal employee who worked as a lengthsman and lock-keeper on this section during the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The plate on the seatback reads: 'This seat is erected to the memory of Esme Dowling who served the South Oxford Canal for 31 years'. Below those words is a line from Binyon's 'For The Fallen': 'They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old'.
