Seen here from Ritson Road, this church was built in 1876 as the Hamburg Lutheran Church in a German Gothic style to serve the community associated with the adjacent German Hospital. In the Second World War there was much paranoia directed at Britain's German community with the nursing staff at the hospital all arrested and interned on the Isle of Man; in the case of this church the concern was, however, perhaps justified. The Minister before the war was one Rev Schonberger, a notorious nazi, and it is said that the church housed a radio transmitter larger than the BBC's. The church passed to its present congregation in 1982, reflecting the changes in the composition of the local community.
