This must have been a day when the traction current was off either for maintenance or due to a power cut, as the normal all-stations service from Manchester to Crewe was being operated by a diesel unit - and of a type that was already old, being superseded by 'Sprinters' for regular services. Nowadays if the current was off you would be lucky to get a substitute bus!
