Oak pollard near Amie's Corner, New Forest

Alongside the access track to Roe Cottage is this huge oak pollard. Pollarding was banned in the New Forest in 1698 (to try and curb abuse of the right of fuelwood) which means that this magnificent old tree is over 300 years old. Such specimens are often found in the ancient and ornamental woodland, although their numbers are dwindling due to storm damage (in the early 1990s) and extreme old age. The occasional yew can be found in this woodland, a tree with a much greater lifespan and resilience.
