The A338, because it is an A road, is exempt from the blanket 40mph speed limit on New Forest roads. This sign, which stands where Image, displays the crossed out 40 sign signifying that the New Forest 40-zone ends here. However, owing to the twistiness and semi-urban nature of this part of the A338, it too has a 40mph limit, denoted by the larger figure in the red circle. The sign therefore, in effect, shows a 40mph speed limit changing to another 40mph limit.
