This fine statue by the sculptor Henry Toft dates from 1893. Richard is standing in frock coat, poised as if about to speak. He is holding a sheaf of papers headed PEACE his right hand. His left arm is flexed and he is holding a ‘pince-nez’. He was born in Tregaron in 1812 and became a Nonconformist minister in London before being elected the Liberal Member of Parliament for Merthyr Tydfil in 1868. He was known as ‘The Apostle of Peace’ in recognition of his work with the Peace Society. More: http://education.gtj.org.uk/item.php?lang=en&id=23867&t=1
