By the end of the 18th century Islandmagee had been completely settled by lowland Scots of Presbyterian descent. Methodism arrived in 1800 with an American evangelist. It was another 29 years before this “chapel” (Middle Road) was opened. It seems that the Presbyterians gave their support to the “opposition” in erecting the new church.
