It's extraordinary to think of it now but this is the trackbed of the long-dismantled first railway line to Edgware from London, opened in 1867 by the Great Northern Railway as their Edgware, Highgate and London Railway. It terminated at the location of the current Broadwalk Shopping Centre. Faced with a loss of traffic due to the opening of the underground to Edgware the railway was closed to passengers in 1939. The trackbed east of this point and looking in this direction is now the Lyndhurst Park & Mill Hill Old Railway Local Nature Reserve, managed by the London Wildlife Trust. The Reserve is currently open to the public on Sundays between 10am and 3pm. This is a view taken looking in the opposite direction through the security fence to Hywel's Image
