The red berries of Viburnum lantana making a colourful show beside Newton Abbot Footpath 37. The name "Wayfaring" comes from the C16 botanist John Gerard's interpretation of the French name "viorne" as something that ornamented the way. "Leaves and berries have been used to make a gargle, to fasten the teeth, and settle the stomach, and the leaves to make a black hair dye" (The Englishman's flora: Geoffrey Grigson).
