The original street was developed in the first decade of the 19th century and included small workshops and terraced houses. These survived until the 1950s when they began to be pulled down with the last going in the 1970s. What then followed was 25 years of wrangling between council and developers over what to build on the site, a new library, ice rink, hotels and other ideas were put forward but failed to get off the ground. In the meantime the area became a giant car park with the outline of the former street still visible on the ground until 2003 when the go ahead was finally given to develop the site which was completed in 2005 providing a new modern library building, retail outlets, offices, flats and a hotel. This view looks up towards the northern junction with North Road.
