This (now closed and abandoned) gateway led from Queensway Image to Glenmore House. The house was acquired, in 1835, by the linen manufacturer. James Nicholson Richardson Image and Image The later building of the railway embankment forced the construction of the gateway (which once had a gate lodge - demolished for road widening in the 1970’s). The architect for the gate lodge was Thomas Jackson who also designed something similar for another linen baron Image The house later became the offices of the Linen Industry Research Association and later, with the decline of that industry, the Lambeg Industrial Research Association which was, in turn, absorbed into the Government’s Industrial Science Division. The latter moved the staff to the old Wallace School in Lisburn – the house was sold but still exists albeit converted into apartments.
