Situated behind the former depot of the Edinburgh Northern Tramways Company, this pulley unit was part of the system for carrying cables for cable tramcars that operated from this site between 1888 and 1920. In 1922, Edinburgh Corporation began converting the system to electric traction and the last cable tram ran in June 1923. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh_Corporation_Tramways
