Designed by William Playfair and built on a steep slope at the foot of St Vincent Street in 1826-28, the church houses the longest clock pendulum in Europe. An apocryphal story exists that the Corporation (Lord Provost, magistrates and bailies) were so irritated by the Edinburgh Academy setting itself up as a rival to the town's High School that it gave permission for the church to occupy this site, thus blotting out the Academy front entrance which originally terminated the view from the top of Howe Street.
