The lane runs in front of the cottages. According to the Dictionary of Difficult Words: http://www.tiscali.co.uk/reference/dictionaries/difficultwords/data/d0010287.html a pottle is a half gallon pot. That makes sense, I'll have a few of those filled with cider.
