When a new road from Shepton Mallet was driven into Doulting in 1871 Sir Richard Paget, 1832-1908, who owned the estate, took the opportunity to rebuild the centre of the village. This is his coat of arms from one of the resultant 'Paget terraces'. The creamy stone is from the local quarry, and was used in both Wells Cathedral and Glastonbury Abbey.
