The church, opened in 1912, took its name from the historic St Mary-in-the-Fields which stood on the site now occupied by the University's Old College. The grounds of the collegiate church are believed to have extended eastwards as far as the Pleasance where this church was built. http://www.kirkofield.com/files/history.htm
