This 19C public house has an individual style of window sill and arched lintel. The name was originally just 'The Volunteers'. The 20C houses to the left replaced two cottages, and behind the cottages higher up Johnson street there was a wheelwright's yard, and behind that the premises of a second-hand dealer called Charlie Stringer, whose motto was "We buy owt".
