The Forncett branch is another name for the Wymondham to Forncett branch line connecting the Great Eastern main line to the Norwich to Ely line. It was opened in 1881 with one intermediate station at Ashwellthorpe. Originally single track it was doubled during the first world war due to the need for extra capacity. The line eventually closed to passengers in 1939 and freight in 1951 however a small spur (where this photo was taken) was retained for storage. Many old carriages were taken here and burnt/scrapped (I met a man who worked there and said up to 8 a night). The Midland and Great Northern Joint railway society saved the Quad art set from this fate as well as some other important carriages. The quad art set has recently been restored and it was said to be the most important set of rolling stock outside of the national collection. They are now on the North Norfolk railway and have been restored Image
